Brewers

A clear-and-gray AeroPress brewing dark coffee into a glass mug on a wooden counter, with a scoop, a stirrer, a mug, a pile of grounds and a potted herb by the window.

AeroPress

AeroPress Original

It brews a small, strong cup quickly and is hard to break, which makes it a good first brewer for milk drinks.

Good for

One strong cup at a time, and concentrated coffee for iced lattes.

Skip it if

  • You usually brew for two or more people at once.
  • You don't want to buy paper filters (a reusable metal filter is sold separately).

A silver Bialetti Moka Express with a black handle on a wooden table, next to a cream mug of frothy latte and a small dish with a honey dipper.

Bialetti

Bialetti Moka Express

The classic stovetop pot. It makes coffee strong enough to stand up to milk, which is why it shows up in so many latte recipes.

Good for

Strong, rich stovetop coffee to mix with milk.

Skip it if

  • You cook on induction. The classic aluminum pot needs an adapter plate.
  • You want a mild cup. Moka coffee is intense on its own.

ESPRO Press P3

The maker says its double micro-filter keeps more grounds out of the cup than a standard press filter.

Good for

French press fans who are tired of grit at the bottom of the cup.

Skip it if

  • You're on a tight budget. A basic French press works well for most people.
  • You're worried about breakage. The carafe is glass.

Generic cone style

Ceramic cone dripper (size 02)

A cone dripper is inexpensive and simple, and it teaches you how grind size and pouring change the taste.

Good for

A clean, bright mug of coffee, one to two cups at a time.

Skip it if

  • You want a hands-off morning. Pour-over takes a few minutes of attention.
  • You brew for a crowd.

Grinders

OXO

OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

A burr grinder gives a more even grind than a blade grinder, and this one is often suggested as a first electric burr grinder.

Good for

Moving from pre-ground coffee to fresh ground for French press, pour-over and drip.

Skip it if

  • You want to grind fine enough for espresso.
  • You have very little counter space. A hand grinder is smaller.

A black and stainless-steel electric burr grinder with a clear bean hopper and a small catch jar of grounds, beside a wooden scoop and a potted plant by a window.

To be chosen

Entry-level burr grinder

A burr grinder gives a more even grind than a blade grinder, which makes coffee taste more consistent.

Good for

Anyone grinding at home who wants an even grind for French press, pour-over and AeroPress.

Skip it if

  • You only buy pre-ground coffee.
  • You mostly make espresso, which needs a different grinder.

Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle

A gooseneck spout makes it easier to pour slowly and evenly, and this kettle lets you choose the water temperature.

Good for

Pour-over brewing, where a slow, steady pour and a set temperature help.

Skip it if

  • You only use a French press, moka pot or AeroPress. Any kettle works for those.
  • You want a budget pick. It is a premium kettle.

Handheld milk frother

A battery-powered wand froths warm milk in seconds and takes up almost no space. We haven't chosen a specific model yet.

Good for

Foamy milk for lattes on a small budget.

Skip it if

  • You want silky milk for latte art. A wand makes bubbly foam, not microfoam.
  • You already own a French press. Pumping the plunger froths milk too.
